Characteristics of EVOH
(1) Chemistry and Performance. Among reusable polymers, PVA has the lowest gas permeability. However, PVA is water-soluble and difficult to process. The method for producing EVOH involves first copolymerizing ethylene and vinyl acetate, followed by hydrolyzing the copolymer to obtain ethylene-vinyl alcohol. This retains a high barrier effect. EVOH copolymers are highly crystalline, and as the ethylene content increases, gas barrier performance decreases while moisture resistance improves, making the resin easier to process; the most notable feature of EVOH resin is its gas barrier effect, which can enhance the retention of flavor and quality by preventing oxygen infiltration when used in packaging structures. In gas-flushed packaging technology, EVOH resin effectively retains carbon dioxide or nitrogen to protect the product.(2) Oil Resistance. EVOH resin also has strong oil resistance and resistance to organic solvents.(3) Thermal/Mechanical Properties. EVOH resin has high mechanical strength, elasticity, surface hardness, wear resistance, and weather resistance, along with strong antistatic properties; EVOH films have high gloss and low haze, resulting in high transparency. Among all commercially available high barrier resins, EVOH resin has the highest thermal stability, which allows for the recycling of waste generated during processing.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
